San Sebastian-- Barcelona-- Santander

It's been awile since I've gotten the chance to write here for ya'll to read. So here I am trying to catch up some España for you guys!

The following weekend after Madrid we decided to go to San Sebastian which is a beautiful town about 3 hours by bus from Santander and on the ocean. Upon arriving in San Sebastian we headed to our hostel and started to sing disney songs by translating them in spanish on the way there-- very entertaining. jaja. we headed out to get food for dinner which in total cost 10€ for all four of us (Jes, Christine, Erika, y yo) We made spaghetti and ate carrots too it was so delicious and fun to be able to cook for ourselves in a kitchen!!! We went out dancing that night and finally went to bed at 6a.m.
The next day we just walked around San Sebastian and also went hopping around bars to eat pinchos which are pretty much snacks that you choose all the ones you want and put them on your plate. yummm. i tried octopus, tentacles and all. cant say that was my favorite! San Sebastian was awesome overall with tons more stories but i'm trying to keep this to be shorter blog than the last.

Last weekend we travled by plane to Barcelona, literally a 45 minute flight and we were in the amazing city of Barcelona. Everyone told me to not get pick-pocketed. success.
We arrived during the daytime around 330 so we checked into our hostel and then walked around town to an amazing cathedral and with people on the streets playing instruments and we even stumbled upon some guys break dancing in the street until some cops came. I have a video of that here if you want to watch! Yet again we decided to make dinner but this time it ended up being a veggie stir fry, so we were still hungry which led to getting helado and then later going to a McDonalds to eat some fries

Park Guell

La Sagrada Familia

On Friday we took a massive walk to Park Gaudi which is famous, obvious when we got there because it was swarming with people. We didnt stay long cuz we were starving so found a cute little restaraunt with the mom and dad making the food and the daughter serving and taking orders. I ordered an entire pizza for myself and enjoyed it very much. After that we walked over to La Sagrada Familia (this place was incredible, actually this is where the Pope is  in Barcelona Nov. 7th, it's a big deal) Erika and I went inside and I can say I have never seen the inside of a building more magnificent than that. They're doing construction on it still because back during the spanish civil war people destroyed much of the cathedral and they have constructed much of it to show off what Gaudi's style was.
Ate spaghetti again for dinner (cheapest meal ever) and then went out walking down Las Ramblas (one of the most popular streets in Barcelona) and finally found a dance club that we stayed at till 6a.m.
Next day we found a mercadillo or open market ---HUGE. and literally could get lost in this place. Bought some yummy calzone type thing and a fruit smoothie as well. The types of food they had there was impressive. Never have I seen so much fresh food in one place. Walked down Las Ramblas and saw all the street performers. Here are some pictures:

Sunday morning we had to get up eat breakfast and head out to catch our flight. We couldn't for the life of us find the right metro so we walked around forever. Finally found the right station and then got on the wrong metro. We hopped off before it left. oh boy. Flew home to Santander. Something about Santander I absolutely love and miss it when I'm gone, so coming home was great. :)

This weekend we decided to stay in our home town which included going out at night and for me, going to the park and reading my book for hours. Also went and bought a gofre con chocolate (waffle) yum yum yum. Today I watched the news with my parents about the Pope coming to Barcelona. After that I went running and it was the MOST GORGEOUS DAY of my life. I have never seen a day more beautiful and Spain would be the place to have the most beautiful day also. It was pouring rain, half the sky was dark, the sun came out on the ocean and a full bright rainbow appeared. I was blown away.

It is ridiculuos how much this trip has impacted my life. Some days I'm just completely in awe and
cant even wrap my mind around this culture. I knew there would be the struggle at times with communication but have learned that it is much more about the history behind this country and culture and lives. Crazy. I have come to appreciate where I live and my life at home as well. There are a few things I miss one is hanging out at a friends house. Everyone is always outside because that is where people are social. Home is for the family only most of the time. I did get the awesome opportunity to go to my friend Erika's house for lunch after school one day because it was her birthday and her host mom let her invite me over. It was a totally different feeling than at my house and I enjoyed seeing a different perspective of living elsewhere here. It was for her birthday and they didn't have 22 for candles so they put 2+1+1= 22 years old. jaja

Madrid Adventure :)

So first off, Wednesday after school went to la playa de Sardinero and swam in the ocean with huge waves! went to take a picture of jesika, erika, and myself with the wave behind us (sounds stupid now) and we hear the wave coming, turn around and BAM i get a face full of sand because the wave pummeled us JAJA

Thursday after class i packed for madrid, alicia packed two bocadillos (sandwiches) for me and tons of fruit and cookies :) went to bus station and then to the airport where we waited for 3 hours cuz our flight was delayed. Arrived in Madrid around 11p.m. and took a metro (first time for me to ever be on a metro.. I compared it to a Disneyland ride: later on in the trip it wasn’t so much like Disneyland anymore)  to our hostel La Posada de Huertas. We were starving so we walked around and found a nice little restaraunt with a bunch of people celebrating a birthday. The couple who owned the restaraunt were super sweet to us and invited us to come to karaoke with them after they closed. So we went to a Karaoke bar and sang a Michael Jackson song jajaja It was a lot of fun :)

metro station :)
Friday we walked around Madrid and went to Museo del Prado, ate paella at a local restaurant, got helado and then took the metro back to our other hostel Barbieri International Hostel. It was a nice hostel but our room was right by the popular side of town and people were yelling all night. I heard a lady yell ESPAÑA!!!! Probably 10 times or more.

What's on the menu? looks like we're having PAELLA for dinner :)

Saturday was POURING… no DRENCHING rain. It was ridiculous actually because I only had sandals to wear and so I was soaked all day. Erika and I wandered and found ourselves at the Palacio Real where the King and Queen actually live. Waited in line for an hour and met a nice couple from Texas. Inside was breath taking, I have never seen rooms so magnificent in my life. They were decorated from ceiling to floor, everything was gorgeous. So from there we went to grab some lunch which included a loaf of bread, cheese, and chicken (cheap meal) we checked in at our hostel and then went and explored the gardens where there were weird round shaped trees and visited 2 palaces. At 7 we went to the Reina Sofia museum and looked at awesome artwork of Salvador Dali and Pablo Picasso. Picked up some organic food that we found (MMMMMM) and met Tessa and Jen from Canada at the hostel. Erika and I were about to die because we had walked over 10 miles probably in that one day, so we took a “ciesta” at 930p.m. woke up and went out on the town with a bunch of people from the hostel. Met people from Santander who were studying here, people from Canada, Germany, Norway, England, Italy, and all over the U.S. It is such an awesome thing to be somewhere where I can meet people from different countries… literally is incredible to me.

We found an organic restaraunt!!!

Erika and I in the metro station.

Erika found some packaged hamburgers ready to go!

Sunday checked out of the hostel and into another. Walked around the plaza de España, ate a bag of chips for lunch. Went to plaza mayor and saw a flamenco dancer and then mickey mouse, bugs bunny,  spongebob and a weird guy who looked like an orc from lord of the rings who walked up behind Erika and she screamed JAJA it was priceless.
We caught the metro to the Plaza de Veras and went to the bull fights. It was very interesting to say the least and also I thought it was sad as well cuz the bull’s die. Definitely a cultural thing that we wanted to see! Met Tara and Marlin from Canada and went out to dinner with them afterwards with Jesika and Christine who had come back from Morocco. Left the restaurant at 1150. We left out hostel at 1a.m. to go dancing and stayed out till 5a.m. Also…. On top of that I’m sick L

Fruits and veggies are all packaged.

Plaza de España

Plaza de Mayor where there were tons of people

I'm not exactly sure what this was supposed to be. But itwas a guy in a
costum and he would scare little kids as they would walk by.

This guy looks like an orc or something from Lord of the Rings.
He snuck up behind Erika and she turned around and screamed.
Priceless.

Spongebob trying to make some moeny!

people com up with very interesting ideas.

Me and Erika at the Bull fights

Monday we all went to the Museo del Thyssen, sooo awesome. Ate carrot cake J metro, airpot late. Spent the night at the airport on the floor… nope it wasn’t comfortable at all!!! Woke up at 4 a.m. Tuesday and got on the plane at 630 got back home at 8 and slept till 230. Ate lunch at 530 and then no dinner cuz I didn’t feel good. Alicia gave me hot chocolate for my throat and then brought me a scarf and tied it around my neck because it would keep my throat warm while I slept. I felt like I was being strangled so before I went to bed I tried to untie it and couldn’t… oh my. Finally untied it and went to bed!!

carrot cake

eating our lunch on a bench on the streets of madrid

Palacio Real.. incredible.

Wednesday study for my test and went to helado and got amazing ice cream. Erika and I talked to Cesar who taught us the words that people use most commonly here like “vale” which means “ok, good, bien” and lots more but that’s the most popular.

my sour patch kids are running out and it's only the 3rd week :(

dinner tonight. paella, fried egg (but in a thick 3 inches of oil) and
some egg rolls.

Alicia knows I like Mexican food so she likes to make
something spicy for me because here in Spain they don't
eat a lot of spicy food. I sat with Alicia and carlos at
the table and it was too spicy for them they kept saying.
I though it was sooooo good :)

Well now that I’ve caught up on my blog I have to go to sleep.
Love you all back home :)
